Let’s discuss the precautions to observe when operating a vibratory roller.

【文章概要】1. When compacting loose materials, first apply 1–2 passes under negative pressure before proceeding with vibratory rolling. 2. When working on slopes, keep the travel speed as low as possible and do not operate on slopes steeper than 20%. 3. Operate the vibratory roller in low gear, and during operation, carefully check that there are no workers or obstructions above, below, or to the sides. In case of an emergency, sound the warning horn or place appropriate signage in advance before resuming work.

1. When compacting loose raw materials, first apply 1–2 cycles of negative pressure before proceeding with vibratory rolling.

2. When operating on slopes, the speed should be reduced to the lowest possible setting, and driving is prohibited on slopes with a gradient exceeding 20%.

3. When operating the vibratory roller, use the low-speed gear. During operation, carefully check that there are no workers or obstacles in the front, rear, left, or right. If an emergency arises, sound the warning horn or place appropriate signage to alert others before proceeding with work.

4. Pay close attention to the coordinated operation of multiple vibratory rollers, maintaining proper formation and spacing—3–5 meters front-to-back and side-to-side, and 0.5–1 meter vertically. When traveling on slopes, use a low gear (0–7 km/h) to prevent inertial forces from triggering landslides. During compaction, adhere strictly to the compaction procedures specified by the construction team; avoid missing any areas and do not arbitrarily adjust the compaction speed or stop the machine without authorization.

4. During operation, vibration rollers must not be serviced or lubricated. Operators must remain at their stations while the roller is in motion, and no personnel are permitted to approach or work alongside the equipment during operation. Sandals, extremely short shorts, flip-flops, or headphones are prohibited while working.

Things Beginners Should Pay Attention to When Operating a Vibratory Roller

1. During operation of a vibratory roller, if misalignment is detected in the phase‑shift clutch or the vibration‑initiation clutch, immediately shut down the machine and disengage the main clutch. The affected clutches must then be inspected, adjusted, and diagnosed for any faults. Do not increase throttle input or attempt to compensate by running at high speed with excessive power, as this may damage the clutch plates.

2. When an emergency stop is required during operation or driving, first depress the main clutch pedal to disengage the drive, then apply the brake pedal; otherwise, the braking system may be damaged. To release the brakes, first lift your foot from the brake pedal, then release the main clutch pedal to resume driving.

3. For rollers equipped with a differential lock, during normal operation, the differential lock should first be engaged at the differential‑locking mechanism to facilitate turning and prevent damage to the ground. When the machine becomes stuck in mud or encounters stones that cause the rear wheels to veer off course, activating the differential lock can help correct the rear‑wheel deviation and enable the machine to clear the obstruction.

4. When changing the travel direction of a vibratory roller, first move the reversing lever from the forward (or reverse) position to the neutral position; once the roller has come to a complete stop, then shift the lever to the reverse (or forward) position. Do not make the switch abruptly, as sudden changes in travel direction may damage components.

5. After the machine is shut down, it should be parked on a level, stable surface. Do not park at the edge of the roadbed. If parking on a slope is necessary, secure the wheels with stones or blocks and place warning cones.

6. When driving uphill or downhill, shift into a lower gear in advance; it is strictly prohibited to ascend or descend slopes in high gear.

7. When performing rapid rolling operations, it is strictly prohibited to activate the vibration equipment.

8. When changing the vehicle speed, first disengage the main clutch or the shift clutch before operating the speed‑adjustment lever to shift gears.

9. The vibratory roller shall be started or stopped only while in motion to prevent damage to the ground surface. Starting vibration on hard surfaces is prohibited to avoid damaging the vibration‑damping system or other components.

In fact, for most users, it’s advisable to start with small and medium-sized rollers when practicing compaction. Although the compaction techniques are similar to those of larger machines, smaller rollers are more agile and easier to handle. Therefore, beginners are encouraged to begin with compactors in this size range to gain experience.
