Operating Procedures for Double-Drum Roller Compactors

The tandem steel‑wheel roller is a common medium‑ to large‑size pavement compaction machine, delivering highly effective results when compacting sandy, semi‑cohesive, and cohesive soils, subgrade stabilization materials, and asphalt concrete pavement layers.
How do you operate a double-drum roller?
The machine may be started only when it has been confirmed that there are no obstacles or personnel in front, behind, to the left, or to the right. Before commencing normal operation, the roller must undergo a trial run to verify proper functioning and ensure that the braking system and turn-signal mechanisms are in good working order. During operation, start the engine first and then engage the vibration; set the internal‑combustion engine throttle to medium speed initially, and subsequently increase it to high speed.
Roller compaction is performed with overlapping passes, and the travel path must remain straight. During surface operations, use the distance between the steel wheels and the curb as a reference; when returning, align with the freshly compacted line for secondary compaction.
When working near the edge of an embankment, maintain an adequate safety clearance. On roadways along slopes, compaction must be carried out from the inside outward. When turning, adjust the steering by extending or retracting the hydraulic cylinder to control the front wheels and achieve steering. Before changing direction, stop the machine first; vibration on hard ground is strictly prohibited.
Operating Procedures for Double-Drum Roller Compactors:
Lightly spray water, maintain high temperature and a slow rolling speed, use trapezoidal overlapping patterns, and work in sections. When compacting, start from the outer edge of the pavement and gradually move toward the center. Ensure that each pass overlaps half the width of the steel wheels. Avoid making emergency stops, sharp turns, U‑turns, steering maneuvers, gear changes, or machine shutdowns on surfaces that have not yet been fully compacted or have just been compacted.
When stopping, moving forward, or reversing, first stop the vibration and then shift gears.
Before starting the machine, verify that all working mechanisms and fastening components are in good condition. After startup, conduct a trial run to confirm proper operation, and only proceed with work once braking and steering have been confirmed to be functioning correctly. The roller’s compaction force can be adjusted by adding or removing ballast. When compacting soft subgrades, first pass over the surface 1–2 times before engaging vibration. Do not adjust the vibration frequency during operation. Prior to commencing work, set the vibration frequency first; then engage vibration and subsequently make any further adjustments to the frequency.
Reversing, as well as adjustments to the vibration clutch and brakes, may only be performed after the main clutch has been disengaged. Do not use the high‑speed gear when driving uphill or downhill. It is strictly prohibited to use the high‑speed gear for sharp turns, and vibration must not be activated while traveling at high speed.
Operating precautions for double-drum rollers:
Newly constructed roads should be compacted from the center outward to both sides, avoiding proximity to the subgrade edge to prevent slope failures. Ensure that the mud scrapers on the front and rear steel wheels remain flat and function properly. Do not roll over subgrades that are excessively soft. When filling the vibratory drum with sand to increase its weight, take care to keep it free of water to prevent frost‑induced cracking.
Vibration should be initiated or stopped only while the machine is in motion. Vibration is strictly prohibited on solid, stable pavement. During maintenance, shut off the engine, apply the brakes, and use chocks to securely wedge the rollers symmetrically. Maintain a minimum clearance of 3 meters between two or more rollers, and never operate in single file on slopes or allow rolling downhill to prevent accidents.
