How to choose a small road roller?

Small road rollers are also known as walk-behind rollers. Currently, domestically produced small road rollers are categorized into walk-behind single-drum rollers and handheld double-drum rollers; there are three main types in total. Engines are available in diesel and gasoline versions. When selecting a roller, use a static drum for cohesive materials. For static‑pressure rollers, opt for a three‑drum model when compacting subgrades and a two‑drum model when working on pavement surfaces.
Rammer rollers are well suited for compacting cohesive soils and make excellent equipment for constructing dam core layers, but they are not ideal for surface compaction. For non-cohesive materials, Luoyang Agricultural Machinery recommends using vibratory rollers. When the soil has low moisture content and is difficult to moisten with water, a heavy‑duty roller should be selected. Conversely, when the material is highly moist and has a low dry unit weight, a light‑weight roller is the appropriate choice.
Tire rollers are suitable for a wide range of crushed materials and deliver excellent compaction performance on asphalt pavements. Small rollers are ideal for minor projects and confined spaces—such as municipal road rehabilitation, rural road upgrades, landscaping and bridge construction, and residential access roads—as well as for trench backfilling or as supplementary compactors in large‑scale roller operations. In practice, a single type of roller often cannot complete the entire compaction process; instead, it is typically necessary to combine large, medium, and small models or employ multiple configurations. Therefore, when selecting rollers, factors such as the nature of the project, the scale of construction, and the allowable duration of compaction work must be taken into account. Ultimately, an economically sound and practical choice should be made through comprehensive analysis and careful comparison across all relevant considerations.
The basic configuration of a small road roller primarily comprises an engine, a hydraulic system, steel wheels, a vibrator, and an operator’s handle. Engines are available in diesel and gasoline versions. At present, small road rollers in China can be classified into three types: walk-behind single‑drum rollers, walk-behind double‑drum rollers, and mounted rollers.
